How Maha Kumbh Mela is going hi-tech

From artificial intelligence (AI)-powered crowd control systems to multilingual announcement platforms and even underwater drones, the authorities are introducing innovations to make the experience safer, smoother, and surprisingly contemporary. Here’s how the biggest gathering of humanity in the world is embracing a tech-savvy approach, Condé Nast Traveller reports.

Underwater drones
For the first time, Kumbh officials and the Uttar Pradesh (UP) government have deployed underwater drones at the Triveni Sangam (a confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers) to enhance safety during the sacred bathing rituals. These advanced devices can operate up to 100 metres below the surface, providing real-time surveillance to ensure the holy waters are secure for crores of pilgrims.

Multilingual announcement system
To ensure seamless communication among the diverse crowds attending the event, a multilingual announcement system has been introduced. Broadcasting in 10-12 languages, including Hindi, English, Gujarati, Tamil, Kannada, and more, the system bridges linguistic gaps. It will deliver crucial updates and instructions at the railway stations and the Kumbh Mela grounds, ensuring everyone stays informed.

AI-powered chatbot
The Kumbh Sah‘AI’yak chatbot is transforming how pilgrims experience the mela. The AI-powered digital assistant offers real-time guidance on events, public amenities, must-visit attractions, the history of the Kumbh, routes, and schedules. This user-friendly facility acts as a personal guide, ensuring an informed festival experience. The chatbot is accessible on the official Maha Kumbh mobile app, the website, as well as on the official WhatsApp number.

Maha Kumbh Rail Seva Sapp
The Maha Kumbh Rail Seva app is a one-stop tech solution for trip-related queries, including special train schedules, shelter availability, entry gates, and directional train information, ensuring smooth journeys for visitors.

QR-enabled jackets
Railway staff are making ticket booking easier with quick response (QR)-enabled fluorescent jackets. Visitors can scan the QR codes on these jackets to directly download the unreserved ticketing system (UTS) app, which allows them to book tickets for any station. This unique initiative can be seen streamlining ticketing for the massive influx of pilgrims.

Virtual eye for monitoring
A comprehensive surveillance system with 2,751 closed circuit TV (CCTV) cameras, including 328 equipped with AI-powered facial recognition facility, has been deployed to ensure safety and efficient crowd management. Strategically positioned across the mela grounds, these cameras provide real-time monitoring and enhance security by identifying and addressing potential risks. Earlier, these AI cameras had been successfully implemented during the 2019 Kumbh Mela.

AI-based car parking system
The tedious task of finding parking spaces has been simplified with the AI-powered Park+ app. This digital system allows visitors to search for available parking spots, pre-book slots, and manage their vehicles efficiently, ensuring a hassle-free experience at the mela.

Drone show
A fleet of 2,000 drones will illuminate the skies in a stunning light show over the Sangam nose, adding a futuristic touch to the mela. The spectacle will narrate the legendary tales of "Prayag Mahatmyam" and "Samudra Manthan” to enhance the spiritual atmosphere at Prayagraj. This cutting-edge showcase not only highlights the grandeur of the Maha Kumbh but also symbolises its bold embrace of futuristic technology.

RFID wristbands
Radio-frequency identification (RFID) wristbands are being distributed to pilgrims to enhance crowd management. This tried-and-tested technology tracks entry and exit timings, ensuring effective crowd control and improved safety. It offers a seamless and efficient way to monitor the movement of visitors throughout the event.
