Celebrating Women’s Participation in Kumbh Mela

Women have played a central role in the Kumbh Mela for centuries. This year, their contributions are being honoured through women-led akharas, sadhvis, female saints, and cultural performances. Sadhvinis or women monks are joining their male counterparts in sacred rituals like the Shahi Snaan and the Peshwai procession and share spiritual teachings. Women saints are conferred titles of Mahant and Mahamandaleshwar.

Over 100 women received diksha on 19 January. The growing number of women, including several from Italy, France, and Nepal, joining Naga Sanyasinis signifies a significant shift in Kumbh’s history.

Female devotees engage in seva, cultural performances, and spiritual practices such as meditation and yoga. Efforts like Pink Taxi with female drivers and dedicated washrooms for women ensure a safe and comfortable environment for women pilgrims.
