Basant Panchami: Celebrating third Amrit Snan on 3 February 2025

The third and final Amrit Snan of the Maha Kumbh will take place on Basant Panchami, 3 February 2025. Celebrated in honour of the Goddess Saraswati, this day signifies knowledge, growth, and the vibrant energy of spring. It is a time for devotion, learning, and fresh beginnings.

Legend of Basant Panchami
According to Hindu mythology, Kalidasa, a great Sanskrit poet, nearly drowned himself after his wife left him. Goddess Saraswati emerged from the river and asked him not to do so and take a bath in the water instead. Immersing himself in the river water transformed him into a brilliant poet.

Another legend is about Kamadeva, the god of love, who disrupted Lord Shiva’s meditation. Angered by his action, Shiva burned him to ashes with his third eye. However, on Basant Panchami, Lord Shiva promised Kama’s wife, Rati, to resurrect him after a 40-day penance. Kama was later reborn as Pradumna, Lord Krishna’s son.

Significance of Basant Panchami
By seeking Saraswati’s blessings, devotees hope to enrich their lives with wisdom and creativity. Taking a dip in the holy river, making donations, and performing worship are significant acts on this day that celebrates the arrival of spring and the pursuit of knowledge.
